Android 2.3 GingerbreadWe have been waiting for this announcment. Gingerbread is coming to The Xperia X10 Phones. Sony Ericsson has made it official and has said the update will roll out in Q2 and Q3 of 2011. The Gingerbread update will only be available through the PC-based upgrade clients, it cannot be done OTA (over the air).

Sony Ericsson has been trying to be transparent about its intentions, but has been holding back on updates. The company struggled with past updates so it will be interesting to see how this update evolves.

Sony ericsson is stating that they skiped the 2.2 update for certain reasons.

Our focus has been on Gingerbread. The work we have been doing on Gingerbread for our products launching in 2011 has given us a solution that made it possible to deliver Gingerbread on XperiaTM X10.

The X10 is the only Android Phone in the Xperia lineup that will get the update and that those who chose to do it will lose the ability to downgrade back to the previous OS.

The XperiaTM PLAY, arc, neo and pro are launched on the latest version of Android for smartphones (Gingerbread 2.3) and we plan to upgrade these to the next version of Android (beyond 2.3) available to us, subject to the Google/Android roadmap.
